How To's for student Leadership...
INVITE Children's Ministry Guests:
Many churches have Children's Ministry teams who will come to your school. Call local area churches and invite them to come. Sometimes local Pastors will come and teach a lesson or two. Invite them to come share a message with your club.
KEEPING Their Attention:
Work with your school. There are many useful techniques they may already be using they can share with you for respectfully gaining the attention of the students. Schools often have techniques the students already respond too. Ask your sponsor how they gain the students attention if they become noisy.
REMEMBER:
Be Prepared! Make sure you keep the program moving along. Don't use scolding and scowling as these actions cause students to become uncomfortable and can lead to more disruptions. Don't give way to anger if you begin to feel frustrated. Demeaning sarcasm is destructive and never should be allowed. When students are engaged they tend to follow well.
Always look for better ways to regain their attention if you lose it. A distinct hand clapping rhythm they can repeat is a useful tool. Use helpful reminders to give the speaker their attention. Some schools already have these reminders and train students with them. Finding out what these clues are is a great way to stay in line with the school and get quick student support.
SMILE & MAKE EYE CONTACT:
When you look at them they will look at you. If they look at you they are probably listening. You can even tell them with a smile, "I know you are listening when I see you are looking at me."
USE your clearest speaking voice.
Be sure to pronounce your words well and speak loud enough to be heard on the back row. Ask them to raise their hands if they can hear you. Look at the back row. Are their hands up. Then you have good volume.
Save the Incentive Items for last.
If you give handouts too early they will be distracted by them.
Training the 5th Grade ROW MONITOR
The Row Monitors simply look at the disruptive student until they look back at them and make eye contact. Once they are making eye contact offer a slight smile, make the be quiet or be still hand motion then point to their own eyes then point to the speaker. Then point to the student, then the ears and then to the speaker. This quiet gesture will help them refocus with out embarrassing them over their disruption. Teach this to the 5th grade Row Monitors and have them practice it with you before they are actually monitors. If a child has not looked at you move toward them until they see you and make eye contact. Then stop where you are and do the quiet signal gestures and return to your place.
BIBLES
Encouraging faith is done best by introducing regular Bible Study habits. Helping families afford their child’s first Bible is an important step. International Bible Society is a valuable resource. We include the option to order a N.I.r.V. Children’s Bible on the permission and T-Shirt order form. We set the price for the Bibles at their cost after shipping, so that every child is given full opportunity to buy one. Another option is to find sponsors to purchase them for the children. But they must all be either free to the students or all be charged for.
Get Free New Testaments:
The Gideons International is an Association of Christian business and professional men and their wives dedicated to telling people about Jesus through sharing personally and by providing Bibles and New Testaments. They are known worldwide for our work with hotels, predominantly sharing Scriptures in schools and colleges, prisons and jails, hospitals, and medical offices. You can contact them to have a representative bring New Testaments for your club. Your club members can ask for additional copies to offer to other students.
Lessons
We have a starter lesson plan that will be very useful. In a multi denominational environment doctrine that is common to all Christians is important. Proselyting toward a particular unique doctrine that is not common to all of Christianity in general would not be beneficial to the families who entrust them into your care.
The lessons need to be for the common foundations of all Christians. Foundation teaching is vital, since many of the kids do not get to attend church anywhere. Short but helpful lessons about the Bible, the 10 Commandments, the Cross, Prayer, salvation, forgiveness are good subjects to teach. Visual aids like poster size pictures, video clips, skits…any kind of visual aids will help.
With only 10-12 minutes to make an effective point, lessons need help. A very helpful tool is Object Lesson Novelty Prizes. These can be purchased online vendors like from Oriental Trading Co. as well as local party supply stores with the Club funds received from the T-Shirts. Kids love the novelty prizes and will tell other kids about the club. This will increase your group and give you more opportunity to reach more kids with the Gospel.
